There is an awful lot of finger pointing going on in the world today. Where I live the TV has been inundated with political ads for months now, and as voting day approaches (Aug. 28th here), it continues to escalate.

finger pointing

It doesn’t matter the subject or the person, if something isn’t to our liking, we start pointing the finger at them. Sometimes you just have to wonder how a person can even tie their own shoes, so inept are they made out to be by their opponent.

This is usually what happens when men refuse to accept responsibility for their own actions. The problem is always someone else’s fault. Pointing the finger absolves us of all responsibility when things go bad. Or so we think.

If only life was that easy.

You want in on a little known secret?

God holds every one of us accountable. He doesn’t play the blame game.

And one day we will be required to give an account to God for the lives we’ve lived. On that day our lives will be on full display, and the Righteous Judge will demand an answer from us.

Every. Single. One. Of. Us.

And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.   Hebrews 4:13

For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you. They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.   1st Peter 4: 3-5

Effecting positive change in our world through the power of the Gospel takes time and hard work. A lot of hard work, as in ‘roll up your sleeves, pack a big lunch, and plan to stay until the job is done’ kind of hard work.

It’s the only way. And it’s always been the only way.

You can point the finger at someone else all you want, but it won’t change a thing.

Most importantly, it does nothing to change a heart, which is really what must happen if we are to be agents of positive change in this world.

Someone once told me “you can be part of the problem, or you can join me and become part of the solution”.

I like that.

I like to think Jesus would have said something like it.

I just wish more people saw it that way.
